Announcing Dr. Menzer Pehlivan, featured engineer in MacGillivray Freeman film Dream Big documentary, as one of our keynote speakers at Hot Firm & AEC Industry Awards Conference.

Dr. Pehlivan is a geotechnical engineer specializing in earthquake engineering. She is currently working as a geotechnical engineer with CH2M in Seattle, WA. Dr. Pehlivan specializes in the analysis of seismic site response, soil-foundation-structure interaction, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), and the seismic design of foundation of structures. She was inspired to build more resilient communities and reduce the risk associated with the earthquakes following the 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake that hit Turkey.
Upon completing her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, she continued her graduate studies specializing in geotechnical earthquake engineering. She obtained her doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and started working as a consulting engineer in New York City, where she had opportunity to work on seismic design of projects in the US, Mexico, and Canada. During this time she also served as an Adjunct Professor at Manhattan College where she developed and taught seismic portion of a graduate course for practicing engineers on fundamentals of foundation design.

She has been actively involved with pioneering research projects advancing the state-of-art and state-of-practice of geotechnical earthquake engineering. She led a part of NGA-EAST research effort regarding the modeling of the uncertainty in regional soil effects of Eastern-North America. Following the 2015 Nepal Earthquake, she was one of the appointed members of the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) team to travel to Nepal and perform post-earthquake reconnaissance. Dr. Pehlivan published several journal and conference papers and serves as reviewer for Earthquake Spectra.

Dr. Pehlivan takes active roles in professional organizations, she has taken leading role in development of ASCE Geo-Institute’s Board-Level Outreach and Engagement Committee in 2015 and she is the chair of this committee. She serves as Geo-Institute representative in ASCE Diversity and Inclusion and Institute Advisory Committees. In 2016 Dr. Pehlivan was selected as one of the New Faces of Engineering by American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). She was also selected as one of the ASCE representative for 2016 <ahref=”http://www.asce.org/emerging_leaders_alliance/” target=”_blank”>Emerging Leaders Association Conference.

Dream Big: Engineering Our World is now playing in IMAX®, IMAX 3D® and other giant-screen theaters. Narrated by Academy Award® winner Jeff Bridges, Dream Big: Engineering Our World is a first film of its kind for IMAX® and giant screen theaters that will transform how we think about engineering. Dream Big celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small, and shows how engineers push the limits of innovation in unexpected and amazing ways. With its inspiring human stories and powerful giant-screen visuals, Dream Big also reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people and a more sustainable future for us all. Dream Big is a MacGillivray Freeman film in partnership with American Society of Civil Engineers, presented by Bechtel Corporation. #DreamBigFilm
