Zweig Group is honored to have the distinguished and inspirational Dr. Kit Miyamoto as a keynote speaker for this year’s Hot Firm conference & AEC Industry Awards Conference. Dr. Miyamoto, CEO of Miyamoto International, built a global earthquake structural engineering firm from a five-man Sacramento company into 19 offices in 12 countries with one simple purpose: make the world a better, safer place. A purpose-driven mission drives growth of the company by attracting equally purpose-driven individuals and clients.
While working in earthquake-devastated Haiti in 2010, Dr. Miyamoto saw thousands of children who perished in collapsed schools. This tragedy inspired him to set his company on the path to save the world from earthquake disaster and also create Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief, a technical nonprofit that retrofits dangerous schools and heritage buildings. Miyamoto Relief gathers together innovative funding partners when traditional funding is lacking to achieve its mission.
From iconic projects such as Theme Building at LAX and Michelangelo’s Pieta Rondanini, to helping countries from Nepal to Costa Rica mitigate disaster risk, his firm has completed more than 20,000 challenging projects worldwide.
Miyamoto has won the ENR “Best Global Project” award an unprecedented three consecutive times, in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Major media such as ABC, BBC, CBS, CNN, PBS, NBC, the Discovery Channel, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and Rolling Stone have profiled the firm’s work. Dr. Miyamoto was a featured expert in the “Designing for Disaster” exhibit at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Pehlivan is a geotechnical engineer specializing in earthquake engineering. She is currently working as a geotechnical engineer with CH2M in Seattle, WA. Dr. Pehlivan specializes in the analysis of seismic site response, soil-foundation-structure interaction, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), and the seismic design of foundation of structures. She was inspired to build more resilient communities and reduce the risk associated with the earthquakes following the 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake that hit Turkey.
Upon completing her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, she continued her graduate studies specializing in geotechnical earthquake engineering. She obtained her doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and started working as a consulting engineer in New York City, where she had opportunity to work on seismic design of projects in the US, Mexico, and Canada. During this time she also served as an Adjunct Professor at Manhattan College where she developed and taught seismic portion of a graduate course for practicing engineers on fundamentals of foundation design.
